For a school-owned fleet that operates every day, I would generally prefer tracking that does not depend on the driver remembering to activate it.

That is the main practical advantage of dedicated hardware. 

The tracking source remains attached to the bus. 

A driver app can still work well, especially where buses are outsourced or used temporarily.

But there are more human dependencies.

So I would ask one simple question:

If the driver changes tomorrow morning, will the bus still start reporting automatically?

If the answer matters strongly to your school, dedicated hardware becomes more attractive.

What about weak mobile network coverage?


Both approaches still need connectivity to send live information to the server.

A dedicated GPS device does not magically remove mobile-network problems.

Similarly, a smartphone may still capture its GPS position even when network coverage is weak, but live transmission can be delayed until connectivity returns.

What matters is how the complete system handles interruptions.

Ask your provider:

  • What happens when connectivity drops?
  • Is location data stored and sent later?
  • Does management know when a device stops reporting?
  • Can you see the last valid location?
  • Is there an alert when tracking is unavailable?
